Guide to Tibet Travel Documentation: How to Get Everest/ Ali Region Permits?

Visiting the majestic landscapes of Tibet, especially the Everest and Ali regions, is a dream for many. However, travelers, particularly those from Taiwan and other foreign countries, need to be aware of the specific documentation required.

Travel Restrictions for Foreign Nationals in Tibet

Due to Tibet’s unique cultural heritage, ancient landmarks, and the need to preserve its fragile ecological environment, there are stringent regulations in place for foreign visitors. Besides the ongoing infrastructural challenges and limited tourist facilities, the government has set rules to maintain the province’s sanctity.

Foreign nationals, including tourists from Taiwan and overseas Chinese (except Hong Kong and Macau residents holding a Special Administrative Region passport or a home return permit), need a permit from the Tibet Tourism Bureau (TTB) before entering Tibet. This permit is officially known as the “Foreigner’s Tibet Entry Permit.

Moreover, foreign journalists and diplomats are not allowed to enter Tibet as tourists. The latest directives also prohibit foreign visitors from traveling in Tibet independently. Tourist agencies must outline the travel details, including itinerary, travel spots, and participant information, and accompany the tourists throughout their stay.

How to Secure a Tibet Entry Permit

For travelers, including those from Taiwan, wanting to explore the Everest and Ali regions, not only do you need the Tibet Entry Permit, but also the Tibet Travel Permit. The latter is for areas not open to foreigners and can be applied for at the public security bureaus in the temporary residence or work location of the traveler. When applying, provide relevant travel reasons, fill out the application form, and submit the passport or residence permit for verification. This travel permit has a maximum validity of one year. Extensions or modifications can be sought if required.
